Thursday 24th May 2012 – walking **** sunny :)

The teenage campers gave up and went home (frozen I expect) at 4 a.m. and were amazingly quiet! We had a leisurely start enjoying our perfect spot by the river, watching the birds and eating breakfast. We decided to stay here today and walk to the nearest town – Mont Louis – along the river path, again marked with a yellow stripe. It was an easy path and kept to the river all the way down. We knew Mont Louis had a citadel and were expecting a walled town but as we got near we saw some men who looked like they were trying to get into sleeping bags and we thought they were tramps but Mag said they were wearing camouflage and the next thing we knew we were walking right through the middle of the French commando training course! This consisted of a very daunting obstacle course and lots of natural forest. There were lots of lads and a few girls all in camouflage with their faces painted......eating their packed lunch. There were other troops walking across the bridge into the citadel and it turns out that it is a working barracks and training centre. Really lovely old building. The rest of the town is also within walls which spread down the hill. It was lunch time so the few shops etc. were shut and it was like a ghost town. We had a good look round and walked round the walls and into the little turrets, through tunnels and across the bridge. All free amazingly. Walked back to the van - we were out 3 hours and walked 7 km. It is a beautiful day so had our lunch outside, relaxed and read our books. About 6 we set off up-river saying we would keep walking until we came to a bridge. We walked for an hour and were just thinking we would give up on the bridge idea when we noticed 3 enormous tree trunks across the river forming the perfect bridge. We decided to walk back the same way as it was getting a bit late. Really nice day. It was a good day for nature too – we saw:

Lots of birds, including vultures and cross bills, nothing new but unusual none the less :)
A deer
A snake – a smooth snake we think but it shot into a wall so quickly after it unravelled itself from its sunbathing position, it was difficult to tell.
Many lizards
A water vole
3 foot high ant’s nests made by giant ants!
Fish
Hundreds of alpine flowers including gentians and wild daffodils
